Lieutenant General (Ret) Thomas F. Metz retired from the Army in January 2010 after more than 40 years of active military service. His tour of duty prior to retirement was as the Director, Joint Improvised Defeat Organization, leading the DOD organization tasked with finding and fielding ways to defeat asymmetric threats on the battle field.
Previously he was the Deputy Commanding General and Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. He has also served as the Commanding General of the U.S. Army III Corps and Fort Hood.
LTG (Ret) Metz holds a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. He also holds a professional engineer's license from the Commonwealth of Virginia. His military schools include the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Command and General Staff College, and the Army War College.
LTG (Ret) Metz's most notable awards and decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, U.S. Army Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (3rd Award), Meritorious Service Medal (4th Award), Senior Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, and Belgium Brevet "A" Commando.
